About the Florida Society of Bariatric Physicians

HISTORY

Beginning the Phen-Fen problems in 1996 and 1997, the Florida Board of Medicine began strict oversight of physicians prescribing medication for the treatment of obesity. Many Florida physicians interested in treating obesity were members of a national organization, the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) which has adopted and updated criteria for patient management and proper use of obesity medications. The Florida Board of Medicine promulgated a series of new rules with the help of the sub-set of ASBP members who practiced in Florida. These Florida doctors felt the need for a separate medical society dealing specifically with Florida rules, codes and procedures. Thus, the FSBP was organized. The main purpose of this Web site is to provide a central location for publication of the Florida rules, making it easier for FSBP members to access and reference them.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the FSBP is:

  • To promote the study of bariatric medicine and to seek to advance the specialty within the State of Florida.
  • To conduct cultural, educational, and social activities that will best promote and carry out its purpose.
  • To strive for the elevation of the character and protection of the proper rights and interests of those engaged in the practice of medicine as bariatricians; and to study the means best calculated to render the profession of bariatrics more efficient and useful to the public.
  • To serve as a medium of communication between the members of the corporation.
  • To elevate the standards of training and education in bariatrics in Florida.
  • To provide a means through which the members may cooperate with other professional and civic groups concerned with the bariatric health of citizens
  • To have all of the powers conferred upon corporations organized under the Florida Not for Profit Corporation Act.
